Glossary & Abbreviations

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS):

A monitoring technology that uses fiber optic cables to detect sound and vibrations, helping to identify disturbances and prevent threats along pipelines, cables, or other critical infrastructure.

Distributed Temperature Monitoring System (DTS):

A system that continuously monitors temperature along an entire length of a fiber optic cable, enabling quick detection of overheating in power cables or pipelines.

Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS):

A compact type of switchgear that uses gas, usually sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), to insulate high-voltage components, providing reliable and space-efficient protection in electrical substations.

Linear Heat Detection System (LHDS):

A fire detection system that senses heat along the entire length of a cable, triggering an alert when the temperature exceeds a preset level, ideal for large areas.

Optical Ground Wire (OPGW):

A type of cable used in power lines that combines grounding and fiber optic functions, providing both electrical grounding and data transmission for monitoring and control.

Supply Installation Testing Commissioning (SITC):

A complete service package that includes supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning equipment to ensure it’s fully operational and meets project requirements.

Third Party Interference (TPI):

External activities or actions, accidental or intentional, that can disrupt or damage infrastructure, like fiber optic cables or pipelines, requiring protective monitoring to prevent issues.
